ZivildienstA young German has to complete his 13 months' Zivildienst or community service if he has opted out of military service as a conscientious objector. This service is usually done in a hospital or old people's home. Many young Germans choose to do this as an alternative to the Wehrdienst, although it lasts three months longer.
