Gesamtschule

The Gesamtschule is a comprehensive school teaching pupils who have different aims. Traditionally pupils would go to one of three different schools, the Gymnasium, Realschule or Hauptschule, depending on ability. The Gesamtschule seeks to avoid the elitist element prevalent in many Gymnasien, but in Germany these schools are still very controversial. Many parents still prefer the traditional system.
